• Today's Globe features a first page picture of CaptainDon Hudson who flies an A340 from YVR to the Orient and admits nodding off.

I don't know how to do the link but read it

Really it's not as bad as they make it sound.
About 11 years ago I had afriend who was a reserve co-pilot on the L-1011. We were at Maple Leaf Gardens for a Leaf game on a Saturday evening when his pager went off.

Operations called and needed him at YYZ fast to ferry an empty Tri-star to Mirabel to replace a maintance snagged aircraft.

He called me a week later, and said when they got to Mirabel there was no other crew, so the YYZ crew had to fly the passengers to CDG.

Sure enough three hours into it the captain and my friend were asleep, the second officer stayed awake. But he said they had many alarms to wake them up. Finally the crew was all reserve so they did not know when they would be flying. Most of them had been awake from 8:00AM on doing household chores or gardening.

He added they appreciated passengers to talk to on long flights as it helped keep them awake.

  • Ah...now we are getting to the heart of the matter. An unbiased opinion...you say. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

  • I have spent two flights out of YYZ; one to FRA and the other to LHR on the flight deck for a few hours during a night flight. The crew stated that they appreciated screened visitors as it helped them deal with boredom and fatigue. The article may be over dramatic but fatigue is an issue on long flights through various time zones. If we passengers have a tough time with jet lag and night flights, what about crews who do this often and have to be on the ball !
