MONTREAL, June 21 /CNW/ - Air Canada advises that severe weather
conditions in the Northeastern United States could result in delays and
cancellations to flights this evening. The airline recommends that customers
with departures to and from Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa to points in the
Northeastern United States check the status of their flight prior to leaving
for the airport. Customers can call Air Canada reservations at 1-888-247-2262;
TTY: 1-800-361-8071, consult the Air Canada website at www.aircanada.ca, (http://www.aircanada.ca,) or
check flight status information on their web-enabled, wireless phone or
communication devices.

My point is from people that were on the ground (at least in DC) on that night, there was no storm at 8 PM. I do know that the weather was more inclement in Dulles, than at Ronald Reagan National-I can not comment on BWI.
My point, even with safety fully taken into account, is that the storms (at least at National) were not more in effect for more than a couple of hours. In that scenario, could not AC have waited to see if the weather would clear enough, fully taking account of safey, and to see if some of the flights could eventually be flown. What AC did was from about 6 PM, all AC flights were cancelled to all 3 Washington area airports. I also know, at least for National airport, that the weather was clear and calm, for most of the evening and night, although this was not the case for Dulles. What I want to know, is what did the US airlines do during these 6 hours, in terms of flights to/from the 3 airports (some of the answers are already posted).
I just want to know whether all flights were or were not cancelled for 6 hours, from/to these airports - if there were some flights to these airports during this 6 hour stretch, how could these US airlines justify flying during this stretch, and/or AC justify cancelling the flights outright at 6 PM, without giving a chance to see if conditions might improve to justify flights to go there, with the safety issue taken into account?
A friend of mine had no problems flying YOW-IAD late Friday morning. I guess you were just at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Some of the mid-afternoon flights were canceled and the YYZ flight scheduled for 10:40am left BOS at 3pm. When we arrived in YYZ, we waited an additonal 15mins for another plane to leave the gate.
It all started years ago when air travel expanded but the ATC system did not. A big cause of cancelltions under these conditions is the inability of the ATC system to handle the enroute traffic that has been diverted around storm cells.
There is a central command centre for ATC in WAS and they dictate which aircraft get through or stay on the ground at origin because the airlanes are saturated with traffic and cannot accept anymore. It is not unusual for a flight to be given a "ground stop" delay of 1200 minutes!!!
The airlines then thin-out by cancelling until they can get something operating.
