• Air Canada - Travel Advisory for Flights to/from the Northeastern United States

MONTREAL, June 21 /CNW/ - Air Canada advises that severe weather
conditions in the Northeastern United States could result in delays and
cancellations to flights this evening. The airline recommends that customers
with departures to and from Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa to points in the
Northeastern United States check the status of their flight prior to leaving
    for the airport. Customers can call Air Canada reservations at 1-888-247-2262;
TTY: 1-800-361-8071, consult the Air Canada website at www.aircanada.ca, (http://www.aircanada.ca,) or
check flight status information on their web-enabled, wireless phone or
    communication devices.

  • It could be that the airlines are antsy over what happened in Denver last night. 32 aircraft out of service at UAL alone. Over half will not be back flying for two weeks! The storm for the Northeast this evening is still hung up in Ohio and will likely miss the peak travel time tonight.

  • I am all for safety.

My point is from people that were on the ground (at least in DC) on that night, there was no storm at 8 PM. I do know that the weather was more inclement in Dulles, than at Ronald Reagan National-I can not comment on BWI.

My point, even with safety fully taken into account, is that the storms (at least at National) were not more in effect for more than a couple of hours. In that scenario, could not AC have waited to see if the weather would clear enough, fully taking account of safey, and to see if some of the flights could eventually be flown. What AC did was from about 6 PM, all AC flights were cancelled to all 3 Washington area airports. I also know, at least for National airport, that the weather was clear and calm, for most of the evening and night, although this was not the case for Dulles. What I want to know, is what did the US airlines do during these 6 hours, in terms of flights to/from the 3 airports (some of the answers are already posted).

I just want to know whether all flights were or were not cancelled for 6 hours, from/to these airports - if there were some flights to these airports during this 6 hour stretch, how could these US airlines justify flying during this stretch, and/or AC justify cancelling the flights outright at 6 PM, without giving a chance to see if conditions might improve to justify flights to go there, with the safety issue taken into account?

  • I've been in the Washington, DC area since Saturday morning. Friday night there were t-storms/flood-like conditions here causing many flights to/from DCA and IAD to be cancelled. I had no problems flying US from BUF to BWI Saturday morning, but the BUF-DCA flight was cancelled due to the bad weather the night before. This weather system also affected flights to BOS and LGA.

  • All I know is that it was pretty bad here in the Washington, DC area on Friday night. Flight cancellations caused US Airways to overbook their BUF-BWI flights Saturday morning, and several passengers were being rebooked on other airlines' flights.

A friend of mine had no problems flying YOW-IAD late Friday morning. I guess you were just at the wrong place at the wrong time.

  • It's called SAFETY. S-A-F-E-T-Y!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe you have seen those new Air Canada commercials about the ultimate flying decision being in the hands of the captain of the flight? The U.S. east coast has been experiencing extreme weather conditions, and that dictates all flying decisions. And it will likely result in the loss of a lot of money for AC and other airlines. But that is far better than the loss of one or more aircraft and the people inside them.

  • Flights between BOS and each of YUL, YYZ, & YOW were delayed today due to heavy fog in BOS. Most had to make a couple round-trips and refuel before they could land in the afternoon.

Some of the mid-afternoon flights were canceled and the YYZ flight scheduled for 10:40am left BOS at 3pm. When we arrived in YYZ, we waited an additonal 15mins for another plane to leave the gate.

  • At some point, it just isn't worth it to keep a plane, it's crew, and the passengers sitting around, waiting to see if maybe the weather might improve. They also don't want to fly the plane to DC only to discover that a new storm has begun and they can't land. It's better to send the passengers home, reassign the plane and crew to another route, and try again tomorrow.

  • My flight from Ottawa to Dulles last Friday (June 22) was cancelled because of a "electrical storm". All AC other flights from Canada to the 3 Washington airports were cancelled that night. Interestingly, at the planned arrival time at Dulles (about 8 PM), there was no actual rain/storms in DC? Can anyone elucidate whether there were ongoing inclement weather at Dulles, or BWI? Can anyone elucidate: 1) why AC did not postpone the flights to go to the Washington area airports later that night, and 2) did the US airlines cancel flights to the 3 airports, that night?

  • I suspect that a different string of events caused this problem.

It all started years ago when air travel expanded but the ATC system did not. A big cause of cancelltions under these conditions is the inability of the ATC system to handle the enroute traffic that has been diverted around storm cells.

There is a central command centre for ATC in WAS and they dictate which aircraft get through or stay on the ground at origin because the airlanes are saturated with traffic and cannot accept anymore. It is not unusual for a flight to be given a "ground stop" delay of 1200 minutes!!!
The airlines then thin-out by cancelling until they can get something operating.

  • So far as I can tell, there are only 5 cancellations out of YYZ this evening:
    AC422 to YUL at 1800
    AC722 to LGA at 1800
    AC1103 to YYC at 1800
    AC464 to YOW at 1900
    AC151 to YVR at 2145

Not quite "Northeastern United States" for the most part http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

  • Almost all AC flights out of EWR were cancelled yesterday because of storm threats. Most passengers were transferred to flights ex-LGA today.
