    STAR ALLIANCE LAUNCHES UPGRADE AWARDS

FRANKFURT – September 7, 2005 – Star Alliance, the airline network for Earth™, has become the first alliance to offer a Frequent Flyer Programme (FFP) upgrade redemption option across the alliance, rather than on an individual carrier basis. This brings travelling in either First or Business Class into easier reach of the customer.

This enhancement is now available to the FFP members of ANA (ANA Mileage Club), Austrian (Miles & More), LOT Polish Airlines (Miles & More), Lufthansa (Miles & More) and Singapore Airlines (KrisFlyer). Other Star Alliance member carriers will begin to offer this product during 2006.

  • As BB wisely notes, these upgrades work from the highest economy class fares or full fare business, so the majority of people here will seldom or ever likely use this new award, if and when it is offered by AE. It is unlikely that any fare under M in AC terms would qualify for such upgrades to business, so I would not get overly excited by this news, which has actually been known for several months now. [See the NH forum.]

It is much like the article in today's FINANCIAL POST that announced AE would soon have unlimited reward seats on AC, albeit at higher prices. Much ado about nothing...

  • I wouldn't get too excited about this or worry about cc holders using it- for example the Miles and More *alliance awards indicate that if you hold an LH C class ticket (which is full fare for LH- equivalent of AC J)- it is 60 000 miles EACH WAY to upgrade to first- which is 120 000 miles round trip- funny considering a round trip F ticket is the same :)
So... people can upgrade away! If you take a look over in the SAS Eurobonus forum they have some discussion about this.
Point taken as per SAS forum ... I guess most people would realize that the cost of an upgrade is almost (if not equal or more) than the cost of a full reward redemption ticket. After noticing the difference in LH and NH redemptions for upgrades, there still is some inequality in reward choice for them.

Now, how many upgrades vs. actual reward tickets will they (each carrier) make available for each flight? In general for upgrades will they give only a few upgrades or fill the cabin? Guess with the differences seen in each carrier as above, we wont know; as well, AE/AC's response in the matter in general, let alone quantities is still in question.

  • Could not get your url above to work, but I did find:

Seems were are going to have the ability to use miles also? ^

"Star Alliance Upgrade Awards permits customers to redeem miles or points from their FFP account to upgrade by one class, either from Economy Class to Business Class or from Business Class to First Class*, on scheduled flights operated by the participating member carriers. "

  • I could not see where it says that AC/AP are participating??

  • For example: If I am flying YYZ to NRT I might choose to go through ORD on UA first class, similarly YYZ to FRA I might choose LH.

Flew F on United yesterday, better hope you get a 777, the 763's are no better than Executive First. :p

  • You're assuming "Other Star Alliance partners" = "All other Star Alliance partners"?

    =aw

  • I have edited the URL, so it works fine now. Regarding your comment on "the ability to use miles also", I don't understand the "also" part. Rewards = miles, i.e. upgrade rewards = upgrades for miles... or am I missing something?

My point was that today we cannot use points/miles for upgrades. It appears that this may now be a possibility.

  • Implied in " Other Star Alliance member carriers will begin to offer this product during 2006." ?

Let's hope that's not as reliable and truthful as "SAA will be integrated in the next 12 months." SAA have been being integrated in the next 12 months for the last 2 years.

  • Wonder if these would come out of the rapidly disappearing I class? :(

  • "I have a flight on LOT next month that I would happily upgrade with miles...I couldn't tell from the article how to do that..does anyone know how I go about upgrading it?"

With AC miles, not likely. This will be announced in 2006 . . .

  • Mileage upgrades announced to date on other airlines seem to be on higher fare classes so no cheapie flight upgrades for miles!

  • I agree about the non-bargain of this YYZC2 but think of all those "volks" ;) that have zillions of points and nothing to use them on! To them it's just being able to use their points with almost no thought on the value of the spend.

  • FINALLY....this is the best news I have read in years! It may be enough to keep me in the air rather than retire from SE next year!

  • While a nice move for us -- I'm not sure this change will be in Air Canada's best interests...

Believe it or not there are people that fly in paid J internationally on business. Air Canada does not have a F cabin. On some routes regular AC business travellers may be tempted to burn some miles and fly F on an alternative * carrier yet still complying with company travel policies (which at best allow J on international routes).

For example: If I am flying YYZ to NRT I might choose to go through ORD on UA first class, similarly YYZ to FRA I might choose LH.

Great! Once AP gets involved, I can burn some of my AE miles for upgrades on SQ flights which I have always been praying for. ^

  • There is a lot of talk on this subect in the LH forum, and IIRC the cost of a trans-Atlantic upgrade from mid-fare Y to J is quite high...

  • Does anyone know or can speculate either if this *A U/G can used by non-status members with billions of CC-points or will it be a perk just for top-tier *A (AE) members when AC eventually jumps on board?

  • Actually AW I am assuming nothing ... hence my "?"

Don't roll your eyes at me! I was replying to the post above mine, yours is six posts previous.

Actually you can roll your eyes anywhere you want.
