• Has anyone heard anything more about the new Avion card? We are supposed to be able to start redeeming our new Avion points on September 1st, which is only 9 days away. One would assume they will have a redemption schedule in place by then.

  • From working at National Car Rental for my second summer, it is widely expected that National, and its leisure rental, sister brand Alamo will NOT be involved in the Aeroplan program in 2001. National is the lone car rental partner of LMG's Air Miles program, and from my experiance working the rental counter, only about 15% of all customers use CPlus as their point program of choice. About 80% use Air Miles, and the other 5% collect with the many US airline partners. Perhaps it's just not worth having to pay all the fees with Aeroplan if you already have a program such as Air Miles.

  • Have not seen a thing yet, nothing on their web site either.

It seems that Royal got the better scraps, than Amex did in terms of what program they could put together. I think from what I have seen the Royal program has better options than the Amex MR program. I will have to wait until I see all the membership details, until I can make any final decision.

I think that Royal moved very quickly too, or that was the impression. Where as Amex has been like the Tortoise. Still no communication or even a letter to their cardholders. I think that they feel as though if they keep quite all will be well. On the other hand that could be because of the class action law suits they have their hands full of.

You should take a look at the Aerogold, it's Advantex meal benefit is great. if you entertain for business, this can add lots of extra Aeroplan points!

  • My recent Royal Bank Visa statement, now branded AVION, came with a small brochure outlining some of the planned offerings with the new program. They did say we will be receiving full details in a kit to arrive in September.

In the meantime, my statement indicates that I have earned198 Cdn+ points for purchase made during the billing period, plus 10 AVION points. The Cdn+ points still go into my account automatically, and the bonus AVION points appear to remain and will build up during the dual period through December. I have no idea what the 10 bonus points represents, how it is arrived at, or what.

There is an indication these points may be redeemable as of September 1st, and as I noted in an earlier post, the logos of BA, AA and AS, plus those of Thrifty, Alamo and National car rentals as well as Marriott Hotels, is prominently displayed. (Might Marriott be leaving the "new Aeroplan" and the rental companies left behind as Cdn+ winds up?)

Guess we have another few weeks to await full details.

  • This would also suggest that Starwood is moving to Aeroplan.

  • You're right about Amex, they've been telling me for months that a new Platinum plan will be announced "real soon now". My membership year ends on 31/8 and I was going to switch to a green card with MR, but the agent convinced me to hold on, new Platinum announcement coming, etc., etc. Of course he knows no more than we do.

He was right though, since my upcoming trip actually ends on 1/9 and if my new card were to come while I was away, I was worried the Platinum would be rejected.

So I'm hanging in a while longer, they promise me they'll prorate the Platinum fee if I cancel mid-year.

  • If I had to guess I would agree with you on the car rental partners!.
